On Tiger Wood's withdrawal from golf

"This is the biggest news in golf for some years. We all know that Woods has been the dominant player in the game since he won that first US masters title back in 1997, and many, including myself, say he is the most dominant athlete across all sports."

"The fact that Woods, as one of the most identifiable human beings on the earth, is out of his chosen profession, is going to have a huge impact - and you have to say beyond the sport - it will stretch into the world of commerce."

"Woods has such an effect on the business of golf. He is the man who has almost single-handedly increased the prize money - a rise of $210 million (on an annual basis) since the time he came into the game. In the late 1990's if golfers on the PGA played for $1 million a week - that was a good week - but then Woods came along and now $5 million and sometimes more is up for grabs most weekends."

"That is the impact this man has had on the game!"

"The people that have driven the huge increases in those purses - the heads of the television networks and major corporations - are not going to be happy when Woods is absent from the course during the rest of 2008, especially during major championships."

He was ranked 157 going into the event but was just a couple of Tiger Wood's birdies away from winning the US Open."
